Four Natural Ways to Combat Constipation

There’s no doubt about it, constipation is an embarrassing topic as no one wants to admit to being a bit backed up! Still, all of us suffer from this ailment from time to time. It’s particularly common with pregnant women and if when taking certain medications. Over the counter treatments abound. But before you drop a lot of money at the drugstore, consider these simple and effective fixes.

  1. Hydration
Getting more fluids into your system can help everything move better and more easily. Aim for eight to 12 glasses of liquid a day, and make the bulk of them water. Don’t forget the benefits of other drinks, such as green tea, black tea and coffee.
  2. Coconut Oil
Internal medicine specialists suggest a tablespoon or two of this tropical oil each day to lubricate your intestines and prevent constipation. Try some of this neutral tasting oil in your morning Joe, in homemade salad dressing or even on its own.
  3. Fiber
Look for easy-to-digest food that’s high in fiber such as berries, prunes or bananas. To prevent future issues cut back on low fiber grains and eat more whole grains, fruits and veggies.
  4. Exercise
It might not be the first thing you think of, but getting some exercise can help to move things along by putting force on your intestines and colon. Shoot for at least 30 minutes a day of aerobic exercise to prevent constipation.
